Over the past 60 years, it has contributed significantly to scientific research on the Greek seas and their ecosystems, the consequences of pollution, the quality and quantity of fish stocks, aquaculture techniques, marine ecosystems, and more. At the same time, it has documented thousands of aquatic invertebrates, fish, and planktonic organisms, thus mapping the vast biodiversity of the Greek seas.
The foundation is divided into three scientific institutes: The Institute of Oceanography, the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology &Aquaculture and the Institute of Marine Biology Resources & Inland Waters.
The HCMR is hosted at the “Thalassokosmos” complex in Gournes, Heraklion, and supports and complements the research and operation of CRETAquarium.
