CRETAquarium is one of the largest and most modern aquariums in Europe. It was established and operates as part of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR).
It is located in the north-western part of the former American Base in Gournes, and together with the HCMR research institutions, it forms Thalassokosmos – one of the largest centres for marine science and the promotion of the Mediterranean marine world.
The birth of the first largemodern impressive aquarium in Greece
The creation of a large and modern aquarium on the island of Crete was both a challenge and a vision—not only for the local research community, but for the Cretan society as a whole.
The overwhelming response from the hundreds of thousands of visitors who come to CRETAquarium each year justifies the tireless efforts made by the former Institute of Marine Biology of Crete, as well as by today’s unified national body for marine research, the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR).
CRETAquarium has become an expert in presenting species and ecosystems of the Mediterranean, a sea of unique biodiversity that gave birth to ancient civilizations and welcomes millions of visitors every year from all over the world. CRETAquarium features 62 tanks of various sizes, containing a total amount of 1,800,000 litres of seawater. It is home to 1,500 marine animals and 130 different species found in the Mediterranean basin. Combined with carefully designed habitats, it successfully recreates the Cretan and Mediterranean seabeds.
Additionally, CRETAquarium designs and implements educational programmes and other innovative services, rehabilitates injured animals, and is constantly enriched with new marine species.
The Aquarium’s expertise in presenting Mediterranean species and ecosystems is grounded in the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research’s long-standing experience in Mediterranean marine science.
The Mediterranean Sea hosts an impressive biodiversity, gave birth to ancient civilizations, and continues to welcome millions of visitors each year.
At CRETAquarium, each visitor has the opportunity to discover the sea life of the Mediterranean—to learn, to be inspired, and to contribute to its sustainable future.
Here, attractions turn into knowledge, and experiences raise questions.
One of the largest complexes for marine research marine technology entertainment in the Mediterranean
The Aquarium of Crete is part of THALASSOKOSMOS (the building complex of HCMR in Heraklion, Crete), The largest complex for marine research, technology and entertainment in the Mediterranean area.
It plays a key role in the advancement of scientific knowledge and discoveries in Marine Science, with clearly defined goals to:
Be a medium of promoting and popularizing the knowledge and innovations generated by HCMR and the global marine research community—highlighting the future of humanity’s relationship with the sea.
Offer a unique spectacle that will captivate both children and adults alike.
It also aims to inform, educate, and raise public awareness of the diversity of Mediterranean fish species and habitats by showcasing Mediterranean sea life using modern methods and equipment.
Discover, admire, experience, and inspire action on maritime issues for the decades to come, in collaboration with the visitor.
Enhance the eternal bond between humans and the Mediterranean sea environment and to create incentives and raise questions on the protection and sustainable management of the Mediterranean sea ecosystem.
Establish its unique identity that sets it apart from other aquariums, making it a standout destination in Crete and an alternative form of entertainment.
Be part of ongoing research on the behaviour and welfare of marine species that can thrive in controlled environments, to maintain modern research infrastructure, and to ensure excellent access for researchers and young scientists, serving as an incubator for innovation.
Optimize its actions and activities for growth and development.
